Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is a 52-bed acute pediatric hospital situated in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. It is operated by a New York based non-profit organization, Friends Without A Border, which is dedicated to providing high-quality and compassionate healthcare to children in remote areas of Southeast Asia. In 2015 the hospital was opened on the same campus as the Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital and has been developing its services since then.
LFHC is a teaching hospital offering emergency, inpatient, outpatient and surgical services to neonates and children throughout Northern Laos. Limited on-site radiology, pathology and pharmacy together with a homecare program complement these clinical activities. A major goal of this hospital is to promote clinical learning and professional development of the local staff such that key positions in the hospital are progressively filled by a well-trained and dedicated local workforce.
A. Primary Responsibilities:
- Document laboratory results in accordance with LFHC policy and standards
- Provide all the required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively, while adhering to correct procedures, as well as health and safety guidelines
- Function as part of multi-disciplinary team to offer best care possible to children and their families
- Liaise with other departments when reporting test results
- Able to safely prepare samples for analysis, use equipment in the laboratory effectively and monitor the tests and procedures undertaken
- Contribute to multidisciplinary teams and meetings with the ultimate goal of an excellent quality of care
- Participate in training, supervision, and team meetings
B. Educational Responsibilities:
- Maintain a working level of English relevant to the laboratory technician role at LFHC
- Should have competent communication and computer skills for efficiency and accuracy in reporting results
- Demonstrate a good understanding of medical terminology, and be competent in deciphering results
- Actively seek help and assistance to improve knowledge
- Determine learning goals and identify relevant learning opportunities
- Ask for instruction or explanation whenever necessary in the clinical setting.
- Be prepared to teach for hospital and Friends Without a Border projects
C. Professional Responsibilities:
- Follow the hospital policies and procedures.
- Inform supervisor as soon as possible if unable to work due to illness, following the hospital policy.
- Adhere to the terms of the contract of employment.
- Follow the health and safety guidelines of the hospital.
- Identify inappropriate practices by any LFHC staff member. Take appropriate action.
- Be accountable for all own actions.
- Attend relevant meetings.
- While on duty, act as a representative for the LFHC.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Do not use hospital property or resources for personal use.
D. Personal Qualities:
- LFHC laboratory technicians are expected to be professional, adhering to work hours and excellent personal hygiene
- Treat all persons in the hospital politely and with respect (colleagues, visitors, children and their families).
- Be enthusiastic and diligent in your work at LFHC
- Be honest and trustworthy.
- Be creative and flexible at work.
Work Conditions
The days and hours of work will vary and will be determined by the roster that is published in advance and comply to the shifts requested duration. Employee acknowledge that a full-time employment is of 192 hours per month. Any additional hours worked beyond this limit, required and pre-approved in writing by Employee’s supervisor, will be considered and remunerated as overtime compensation.
