Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) is a 52-bed acute pediatric hospital situated in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR. It is operated by a New York based non-profit organization, Friends Without A Border, which is dedicated to providing high-quality and compassionate healthcare to children in remote areas of Southeast Asia. In 2015 the hospital was opened on the same campus as the Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital and has been developing its services since then.

 

LFHC is a teaching hospital offering emergency, inpatient, outpatient and surgical services to neonates and children throughout Northern Laos. Limited on-site radiology, pathology and pharmacy together with a homecare program complement these clinical activities. A major goal of this hospital is to promote clinical learning and professional development of the local staff such that key positions in the hospital are progressively filled by a well-trained and dedicated local workforce.

 

Position Summary:

This is an entry-level position to work as a junior doctor in paediatrics. They are expected to work in the outpatient, inpatient, emergency and neonatal departments. LFHC is committed to provided compassionate, high quality care to all patients and to looking after the well being of its staff.

 

 

A. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Make the care of patients your first concern, treat everyone with respect and dignity
  • Communicate clearly and openly, respecting patients, and their families, views and autonomy.
  • Clinically assess and investigate patients thoroughly and analytically to reach an accurate diagnosis .
  • Provide evidence based clinical management plans, also incorporate patients's views.
  • Keep contemporaneous, legible, comprehensive medical records.
  • Educate and support patients and their families, provide opportunist health promotion and preventive advice.
  • Liaise with other departments, make referrals with comprehensive care plans.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary team, supporting colleagues and respect their roles and views. This aims to promote excellent quality of care for patients.
  • Participate in training, supervision and team meetings
  • Participate in quality improvement activities (audit, significant event analysis)
  • Participate in management activities.

 

B. Educational Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a working level of English for you role as a doctor at LFHC
  • Keep your medical knowledge and skills up-to-date
  • Actively seek help and assistance if you are out of your depth
  • Develop an evolving Professional Development Plan and identify relevant learning opportunities
  • Be prepared to teach colleagues and for Friends Without a Border projects

 

C. Professional Responsibilities:

  • Follow the hospital policies and procedures.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Inform supervisor as soon as possible if unable to work due to illness, following the hospital policy.
  • Adhere to the terms of the contract of employment.
  • Follow the health and safety guidelines of the hospital.
  • Identify inappropriate practices by any LFHC staff and take appropriate action.  
  • Be accountable for and be able to justify your own actions.
  • Attend relevant meetings.
  • While on duty, act as a representative for the LFHC.
  • Do not use hospital property or resources for personal use.
  • If you think personal performance is compromised, seek advice.


D. Personal Qualities:

  • LFHC doctors are expected to be professional, adhere to work hours and have excellent personal hygiene
  • Treat all persons in the hospital politely, with respect and dignity (colleagues, visitors, children and their families).
  • Be enthusiastic and diligent in your work at LFHC
  • Be honest and trustworthy.
  • Be creative and flexible at work.

 

E. Work Conditions 

  • The days and hours of work will vary and will be determined by the roster that is published in advance and comply to the shifts requested duration. Employee acknowledge that a full-time employment is of 192 hours per month.   Any additional hours worked beyond this limit, required and pre-approved in writing by Employee’s supervisor, will be considered and remunerated as overtime compensation.
