About Company:

Burapha Agroforestry is a plantation and wood products company with established eucalyptus plantations and plywood mill in Laos. Established in 1994, the company has a goal of developing a timber plantation asset in Laos large enough to serve as the primary wood supplier for a major industrial operation. 


This role will be based at Burapha Head Office, Vientiane Capital. The working days is from Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).


Job Overview
The Land and Legal Officer supports the Land department goals to resolve the Company’s land use
limitations across the Company’s land holdings. He / she reports to the Land Manager and supports all
aspects of documentation as well as coordination with local and central Government agencies and local
communities.

 

Key Responsibilities:
• Support the Land Manager across the scope of the LUL Resolution Unit, as per the LUL Resolution Standard Operating procedures
• At all stages of the resolution process, closely follow the Company’s LUL resolution policy, Standard Operating Procedures, any other relevant internal policies, as well as international standards the Company adheres to (e.g. International Finance Corporation’s (IFC) performance standards and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards)
• Prepare and conduct field surveys and record data for the purpose of LUL resolution
• Assist in the preparation of meetings, writing meeting minutes and other official documents required by the Company and Government counterparts
• Together with the Land Officer, ensure all the documents are properly recorded and archived as per the relevant work instructions
• Support coordination and negotiation with Government agencies at local level and with local communities
• Report on progress on a daily, monthly and quarterly basis
• Strive to constantly improve the LUL resolution process and report back to the Land Use Limitations Resolution Supervisor
• Contribute to the Department’s effort to develop more effective resolution methodologies and tools to support the Company’s goals


Qualifications / Experience:
• Degree in law, forestry, environmental management, GIS or related fields
• Driver's license
• At least two years’ experience in the forestry sector
• At least one year’s experience in a negotiation role
• Proven ability to conduct field surveys and use survey tools
• Proven ability to engage and negotiate with local authorities and communities
• Knowledge of the land legality framework in Lao PDR, in particular around forestry and land
• Excellent command of Lao language and good command of English language
• Knowledge of additional local language (e.g. Khmu, Hmong) an advantage
• Energetic and passionate about plantation forestry
• Team player in a multicultural context
